Leaving Inverness, we visited Culloden, the expanse of ground where the last hand to hand battle was fought on UK soil. There is a large visitor centre (closed), but the field was amazing. There is a rebuilt cottage where history says there were some farm buildings, and the English lines are marked out, where the Duke of Cumberland laid out his men, the ground then goes down, over a small stone wall and into a boggy piece of low ground, all wet and with a well (now called the Well of Death), you could just imagine all the dead bodies in this awful piece of land. then it rises again to where most of the clansmen died. Further on are flags marking where the Scotsmen had their lines, with Prince Charlie. There were some really good plaques telling the story, and it was a bit chilling to read of the local people coming after the battle (which lasted 68mins) and burying all the clansmen in their clans. Stones and mounds mark the spots. There are some large mass graves. Apparently the locals idenified the dead by their clan badges and put them together in the graves.
